A MINUTE OF QUIET IN A LOUD SHOUTING WORLD
6:31 PM"Everyone has their own definition of comfort and what is comfortable, for me is a quiet place, a peaceful
space." |
In a degree that I really enjoy the activity
of sharing on the internet, by the end of this year I learn about dealing with
less pressure of having to be online all the time. To unplug, there are joys in disappearing. I have been watching and reading about digital media topics as well, to name some that truly inspire me, Marissa
Anita, an Indonesian journalist and news anchor, who talk and writes about
the distraction of social media in her life, to Cal Newport, a computer science professor, on his book "Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy
World". Reflecting on my
own experiences, we kind of feel like to be present in the digital world means to be present in real life. I was happy to spend my time on the internet until
it goes wrong. The more time I am wiring, to be always connecting in the digital world, the more I
feel disengaged. I simply tweeted less and read fewer tweets than before. A
light read on twitter won’t hurt until I have enough of those unneeded
high-pitched chirps and never ending twit-war conversations of people I do not
even know. I also give myself 1-2 weeks break from Instagram, not having the
tendency to share about my daily life just for the sake of “updating” or keeping
myself updated with other’s people stories or feeds. Improving my browsing activity
by looking out for high-quality contents such as valuable blogs to read as
source of inspiration/education, verified factual articles/news to keep myself aware
with the world, or informative videos which may add new
skills for my life. Decluttering my usage of optional internets,
minimizing my time on irrelative digital activities, understanding that we
choose our behavior relating to the usage of these technologies. To have such liberty and
self-management on what, when and how you choose to do with the internet, the
digital media, is such a relief. It’s a basic foundation to be wiser on using the
tools that is supposed to help us, not control us.
…
Tapping, scrolling, browsing or watching from my screen until I feel overwhelmed by the waves of information on the media. The internet is loud, it’s a shouting world. And it becomes noisier. We can easily see, watch, and hear everything, which most of them are unnecessary, from news, facts, opinions, gentle words, hate speeches, inspiring reads, hoaxes… and I don’t feel comfortable being a part of it. So, disappearing from the unrequired mess of the internet and strengthen more genuine connection with my family and close friends in the real world is my way to have that soft and soundless moments in this loud shouting world. You too... you also need that minutes of quiet for not being always wired in the noisy digital community. You choose what works for you. Not avoiding it to the extreme, like I said in the beginning of this post, I still really enjoy the activity of sharing on the internet, too. And I find it more comfortable for myself to share on my blog than elsewhere. Realizing that writing is my kind of thing, my kind of therapy. The kind of "me time" where I can be myself, pouring all thoughts and feelings. It soothes me, it has always been. Blog doesn't have many active audiences as many as other platforms do (compared to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Youtube). And though I don’t have many readers but I still want to make beneficial posts worthwhile. I want to write work-related articles related to medical and health topics, maybe in this blog or I will make another particular website but let it be another matter for another day to think about. My main point here is, I still choose writing as my media of sharing, just like others who choose music or video as their creative media to share their ideas.

Like as much as I love the
city, some quiet time at the beach, a lake or a cottage might be something you need once
in awhile. So does this blog, to write here is something I need once in awhile.
I also don't push myself to post regularly, I don’t burden myself to share on my
blog all the time. To know how calm and serene to have the self-given
autonomy each time we look at our devices, again it is liberating. I know there
will be days when I will disappear again and returning after with a fresh full
heart. So, let this place be my quiet
place, my peaceful space. Much less boisterous here, untroubled and
undisturbed by the louder sound of the outside crowd. Sometimes a whisper in a noisy room can be the most effective strategy.
Whispers can be powerful, too.
