FIRST PRACTICE TO START TO BE MORE SUSTAINABLE IN FASHION

Describe your personal style then ask these four questions to yourself before purchasing:

- Do you need it?

- Do you absolutely love it?

- Can you wear it in few different ways?

- Can you see yourself wearing it the same in next 1 or 2 years?

If not all yes, then don't buy it.

The biggest goal in sustainable fashion is to buy less and use things longer. One mindset I cultivate when I first choose to join the sustainability project is to watch my consumption. With the rising of fashion industries, fashion has a big contribution to the economy but on the other hand fashion is also one of the most polluting industries. There are growing list of fashion brands that has started to use eco-friendly materials, natural fabrics and biodegradable packaging. The increasingly popular secondhand shopping is also one form to be sustainable. However, those only make up small parts of sustainability practice in fashion businesses. To be aware when we shop our clothes, choose clothes with simple and durable styles that we can wear over and over again is the soul of the campaign. Our clothes don't have to be expensive to be sustainable, but choosing a high quality one and think about the longevity of each piece before we purchase is what we have to keep in mind. We don’t have to follow what is trending, but we have to follow what our heart desires. If you don't need another piece of cloth to use, don't buy it. If it doesn't make you happy when you wear it, don't buy it. If it doesn't boost your confidence, don't buy it. If it doesn't suit you values and personal style, don't buy it. Or else, it will just be there in your closet, barely worn until you decide to trash or donate it.

Being thoughtful and intentional about the clothes we buy is the first step to be more sustainable. I do many readings and research on how to be more sustainable, from the debatable fast fashion industries, fair-ethical clothing production, choosing environmental friendly fibers for your garments to doing repair-redesign-upcycle. While there is no 100% sustainable form of fashion, being more conscious and aware about how we buy our clothes, also asking our own personal taste along with those four questions above is a good practice to start building a better wardrobe that serves us longer. I describe my style as soft, feminine and romantic and these are my three latest purchased items. Simple and timeless dresses I really love that suit my personal style. I have been religiously practicing this wiser-purchasing-my-clothes method for the past one year when I go to buy new clothes that I need. I was a splurge back then hoarding stuff I don't really need and I don't really like. But as I understand my personal style better and become more sensible to buy clothes that I need and that suit my personal style only, I am closer to be more sustainable in fashion myself. So, if you are interested to join to become more sustainable in fashion (and to invest in fine quality garments plus save your money as well), this is the very simple small step on
how to start it.
